Metabolic Testing
Understand How Your Body Uses Energy.
Our metabolic and aerobic fitness assessments help you understand how your body produces, utilizes, and expends energy. Through VO₂ Max testing, submaximal aerobic fitness assessments, and Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) testing, we measure key indicators of cardiovascular fitness, exercise capacity, caloric needs, and overall metabolic health.
Whether your goal is weight loss, improved fitness, athletic performance, or healthy aging, these assessments provide actionable insights that help guide more informed decisions and support long-term health and longevity.
Why Testing Matters
-
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Assessment
Know Your Baseline
Your metabolism influences how many calories your body needs each day. During this assessment, you simply rest while our COSMED system measures your oxygen consumption and energy expenditure. The result is a personalized measurement of your daily calorie needs rather than a generic estimate.
Why it matters: Understanding your metabolism can help guide nutrition planning, weight management, and body composition goals.
-
VO₂ Max Test
Measure Your Aerobic Capacity
VO₂max reflects how efficiently your body delivers and uses oxygen during exercise. During this assessment, exercise intensity gradually increases while our COSMED system analyzes your breathing and oxygen utilization.
Why it matters: VO₂max is one of the strongest indicators of cardiovascular fitness and can help guide training, monitor progress, and support long-term health and longevity.

The Complete Picture
Two Assessments. One Personalized Roadmap.
Resting Metabolic Rate and VO₂max testing each provide valuable insights on their own. Together, they help uncover how your body generates, utilizes, and expends energy, creating a more comprehensive understanding of your metabolic health, fitness level, and long-term wellness potential.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who should consider metabolic testing?
Metabolic testing can benefit individuals pursuing weight loss, improving athletic performance, optimizing training programs, enhancing cardiovascular fitness, or better understanding their body's unique energy needs. Whether your goal is longevity, performance, or body composition, metabolic testing provides objective data to guide informed decisions.
How is VO₂ Max testing performed at Revive?
VO₂ Max testing is performed on a cycle ergometer (exercise bike) while wearing a metabolic analysis mask. As resistance gradually increases, we measure oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide production, heart rate, and other performance metrics to evaluate your aerobic fitness and endurance capacity.
Cycling-based testing is low impact, highly repeatable, and appropriate for individuals ranging from beginners to competitive athletes.
What should I expect during an RMR assessment?
The RMR assessment takes approximately 20 minutes and is performed while you rest comfortably beneath our COSMED Q-NRG Max canopy hood system. By measuring oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production, we can determine how many calories your body burns at rest.
The test is comfortable, non-invasive, and requires no exercise.
Do I need to fast before my RMR assessment?
Yes. To ensure the most accurate measurement of your resting metabolism, we recommend arriving fasted and avoiding exercise beforehand. Food, caffeine, and recent physical activity can temporarily elevate metabolic rate and affect your results.
If you're scheduling both an RMR and VO₂ Max assessment, we'll sequence the appointments so your RMR is measured accurately while still allowing you to fuel appropriately before the VO₂ Max test.
What if I don't reach my true maximum effort during the VO₂ Max test?
While a maximal effort provides the most direct measure of aerobic fitness, it isn't required for everyone. We can perform a submaximal assessment or extrapolate your exercise response to estimate VO₂max when appropriate.
In either instance, you'll still receive valuable information about your cardiovascular fitness, training intensity zones, and overall endurance capacity.
How often should I repeat metabolic testing?
Many clients choose to retest every 3-6 months to assess progress and evaluate how changes in nutrition, exercise, weight loss, or training are influencing their metabolism and fitness. Repeat testing provides objective data that can help refine your strategy and track meaningful improvements over time.
